Ethics and Advocacy for the Correctional Nurse

Correctional nurses face unique ethical dilemmas every day—balancing the duty to care with the demands of custody and security. This course explores the foundations of ethical nursing practice through the 2025 ANA Code of Ethics, with a focus on real-world challenges such as dual loyalty, confidentiality, informed consent, boundaries, and moral distress. Through scenario-based learning, nurses will build skills in ethical decision-making and advocacy at the bedside, within the institution, and across the profession. Participants will also strengthen their professional identity, resilience, and moral courage—essential qualities for sustaining ethical integrity behind the wall.
