Suicide is the leading cause of death in U.S. jails and a persistent risk in prisons. Incarcerated individuals are three times more likely to die by suicide than members of the general community, making suicide prevention one of the most critical responsibilities of correctional nurses. This course examines the scope of the problem, risk factors unique to the correctional setting, and the essential components of a comprehensive suicide prevention program.

Through case-based examples and evidence-based strategies, participants will learn how to recognize early warning signs, apply structured intake screening, and implement nursing interventions that support safety and recovery behind the wall. The course also addresses staff response during suicide attempts and completed suicides, emphasizing ongoing observation, staff collaboration, and the importance of post-incident review.
